WHAT IS BIOCHEMISTRY?
The chemistry of life.
At its simplest, biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that take place within living organisms.
The human body depends upon a complex relationship between water, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and many other substances to build tissues and support normal biological processes.
The traditional Biochemic System, developed by Dr Wilhelm Schüßler in the 19th century, is a system based around twelve mineral tissue salts. Schüßler proposed that these mineral salts had a relationship with the body’s cells and tissues, forming the basis of what became known as the Biochemic System.
This traditional system forms the foundation of the Biochemic approach I use today.
THE BIOCHEMIC SYSTEM
The idea behind the twelve tissue salts.
The Biochemic System was developed in the 19th century by German physician Dr Wilhelm Schüßler, who focused on a small group of mineral compounds naturally associated with the body's tissues.
He developed a system based around twelve tissue salts, each traditionally associated with particular tissues and functions within the body.
The system was later explored and expanded by writers including George W. Carey, whose work helped popularise the relationship between the twelve salts, individual constitution and patterns within the body.
Today, these ideas form the traditional framework behind the Biochemic approach and the twelve tissue salts.
THE TWELVE TISSUE SALTS
The foundation of the traditional Biochemic System.
The Biochemic System centres around twelve mineral tissue salts. Each has its own traditional place within the system and is associated with particular tissues, functions and patterns within the body.
Rather than looking at one salt in isolation, I consider the individual picture — including symptoms, physical patterns, lifestyle and wider circumstances — when preparing a Personal Biochemic Design.
The twelve salts provide the framework. The individual determines the design.
WHY MINERALS MATTER
Small amounts. Essential roles.
Minerals are involved in many normal processes throughout the human body — from the structure of bones and teeth to nerve signalling, muscle function, fluid balance and cellular processes.
The traditional Biochemic System focuses on twelve mineral compounds and considers them through its own particular framework of tissue salts.
My work uses this traditional Biochemic framework as part of a wider individual assessment, rather than assuming that one symptom automatically points to one particular salt.
The aim is to understand the individual pattern, not simply match a salt to a symptom
HOW THIS BECOMES PERSONAL
The same twelve salts. A different picture for every person.
The Biochemic System provides the framework, but your Personal Biochemic Design is created around you.
I consider your symptoms, physical patterns, lifestyle and wider circumstances to build an individual picture and select the tissue salts that may be most relevant within the traditional Biochemic framework.
This is where biochemistry becomes personal.

“The chemical composition of nearly every fluid and tissue in the human body has long been known, but until biochemistry was introduced. No, practical use had been made of this knowledge in the treatment of the sick. Biochemistry is the only system of medicine which answers satisfactory and fully the question “ What is disease?” It not only does this, but it gives a logical reason for every dose of cell salts, prescribed and describes its action in the system.”
